The three physical attributes which make up the character's Life Force are damaged as a result of lethal damage. Assuming adequate medical attention, a person will make a full recovery.

Characteristic damage occurs only as a result of Lethal Damage; Non-Lethal Damage, though it will inflict Limb Damage (see below), will not actually have serious side effects other than pain.

Suffering Characteristic Damage

Each time a person suffers a particular impact of Lethal Damage, they will suffer Characteristic Damage as a result of that injury. Contrary to normal MegaTraveller, a person who is wounded is immediately reduced in effectiveness.

To compute the amount of Characteristic Damage suffered by any lethal attack, count the number of Damage Points inflicted and divide that total by 2, rounding down. This is the number of Characteristic Damage points that attack will inflict.

This system is applied to NPCs, so all NPCs involved in the battle must have UPP data (even if merely generic). However, it is not applied to semi-intelligent animals and other beings who by their nature do not have UPPs.

Allocating Characteristic Damage

Upon suffering an injury and having calculated how many points of Characteristic Damage your character has suffered, you must now allocate that damage to your character's critical attributes using the following system.

  1. Roll 1d6 and subtract that number from the pool of Characteristic Damage to allocate. If the roll exceeds the amount remaining in the pool, simply apply the remaining amount.
  2. Examine the location hit during the attack; if the corresponding attribute is above zero, reduce the corresponding attribute by the amount prescribed by the die roll, to a minimum of zero, all excess being lost. Specifically:
    • If hit in the head, lower arm, or lower leg, reduce Dexterity.
    • If hit in the torso or abdomen, reduce Endurance.
    • If hit in the upper arm or upper leg, reduce Strength.
  3. If the corresponding attribute is already zero, the points instead affect a single attribute of the defender's choice.
  4. While there are still Characteristic Damage points to allocate:
    1. Roll 1d6 and subtract that number from the pool, simply applying the remaining amount if the die roll exceeds the amount in the pool.
    2. Subtract this number of points from a non-zero physical attribute of the defender's choice, reducing it to a minimum of zero, with all excess points being discarded.
    3. Repeat until all points have been allocated.
  5. If all attributes have been reduced to zero, discontinue any further allocation.
