Pregenerated Worlds

To install these worlds into Dwarf Fortress, extract their contents directly into your ./data/save directory under your Dwarf Fortress directory. All worlds are in RAR format, which can be extracted using WinRAR or 7-Zip.

No two worlds on your hard disc can have the same region ID. All of my worlds will be sequentially ordered from 700-799, in order to prevent collisions with typical world IDs. To see a small sized map, view the Thumb link; a full-sized map is available under the Map link. Small maps are approximately 25 KB each, while large maps are approximately 250 KB each. Worlds average about 5–7 MB each.

Old version (0.23.130.23a) worlds include the large map in the download, which you can look at in the ./save folder. New version (0.27.169.32a) or (0.28.181.39a) worlds include both the large map and the small map in the download, and also have crisper thumbnails. None of the new version worlds include the full-scale detail map due to how much they increase download sizes, but these can be accessed in the Legends screen after downloading, or if you really really want to you can download them from here.

Please be respectful of my bandwidth and download only those worlds which interest you. Chances are you won't need more than two or three.

Background Music

After browsing through my song collection for what would make the best Dwarf Fortress background music, I believe I've found the answer.

When I heard this song, the only thing I could think of was "that's the sound of dwarves working".

The first version is recorded at full volume, which might be a bit loud for ordinary gameplay. The second version has had its volume reduced by -9 dB, making it more suitable as background music (your opinion may vary if you like your cars, women, and music loud).

To use the song directly in Dwarf Fortress:

  1. Navigate to the ./data/sound directory beneath your Dwarf Fortress installation.
  2. Rename the existing file song_game.ogg to some other file name (I prefer song_game.ogg.bak).
  3. Extract the contents of one of the two RAR archives into the directory.
  4. Rename the new file to song_game.ogg.
  5. Enjoy!

You can also simply opt to play the song using your favourite music player, though naturally this requires you to start the song any time you want to hear it, whereas overwriting the game song allows you to hear it only while the game is in progress.

Note that in technical terms, it is only legal to download this file if you own a legitimate copy of Final Fantasy 8. (I won't tell them if you won't.)
